Introducing Kolsquare’s Tree-Nation archiving feature

We’ve introduced a new, simple feature with a big impact:
Each time you archive a campaign in Kolsquare, we plant a tree in your name through Tree-Nation.

Archiving now does three things at once: it cleans up your workspace, reduces unnecessary data storage, and contributes to global reforestation efforts.

It’s an action that feels good, improves platform performance, and helps lower the environmental impact of influencer marketing.

Why inactive campaigns quietly add up

If you work in influencer marketing, you know how quickly campaigns pile up. One launches, then another, and suddenly your dashboard becomes a long list of past initiatives that nobody has looked at for months.

Meanwhile, these inactive campaigns continue collecting creator posts in the background, even when they’re no longer in use. That means unnecessary server load, growing data storage, and additional CO₂ emissions.

Today, Kolsquare users create some 4,000 campaigns per month, but only around 100 are archived.

This leads to visual clutter, reduced performance, and a larger environmental footprint.

As a B Corp, Kolsquare is committed to responsible impact, and we just knew there was an opportunity to make archiving easier, more motivating, and more meaningful.

The insights that led to a tree-planting innovation

When we analysed how teams use Kolsquare, we didn’t find sloppiness, we found busy marketers with full plates.

Archiving usually drops to the bottom of the ‘to-do’ list, not because users don’t care, but because they’re managing dozens of moving parts: creator negotiations, deadlines, reports, approvals, and performance follow-ups. In that context, tidying up historic campaigns rarely feels urgent.

And that’s completely understandable.

Archiving campaigns simply didn’t deliver an immediate benefit, even though teams told us they did want a clearer workspace and better platform performance.

At the same time, we learned something else: our community truly cares about sustainability.

This gave us an idea:

If we could turn a routine admin task into a meaningful, feel-good action, archiving would naturally become something worth prioritising, even during a busy week.

The solution: archive a campaign, plant a tree

We’re introducing a simple, rewarding mechanism that makes archiving both useful and impactful.

Every Kolsquare campaign you archive now plants a tree through Tree-Nation.

What is Tree-Nation?

Tree-Nation is a global reforestation platform that enables individuals and companies to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees in certified projects around the world. Their mission is to fight climate change, restore ecosystems, and support local communities through large-scale tree-planting initiatives. As a fellow B Corp, Tree-Nation shares Kolsquare’s commitment to environmental responsibility and transparent impact.

Through our partnership with Tree-Nation, every archived campaign now contributes directly to real reforestation projects, making a tangible difference to the planet.

How it works

With each archived campaign:

  • We stop collecting new posts (reducing server load).
  • You reduce your campaign’s CO₂ impact.
  • You automatically receive a Tree-Nation email where you can claim your tree and track its impact.
  • You can still access all archived campaigns anytime via My Campaigns → Status: Archived.

If the monthly tree-planting cap is reached, you’ll see a friendly message confirming that your action still contributes to reducing CO₂, and that more trees will be planted the following month.

A closer look: what the experience feels like in Kolsquare

When you decide to archive a campaign, the process now feels clearer, lighter, and more rewarding from the first click.

You start by opening the campaign menu and selecting Archive. Instead of a dry confirmation box, you’re greeted with a message that explains exactly what’s about to happen, both technically and environmentally. It reminds you that archiving stops unnecessary data collection and reduces CO₂ emissions.

Then comes the part that makes the action feel worthwhile:

“Kolsquare plants a tree in your name.”

It’s a small line, but it changes the entire moment. Suddenly, archiving isn’t an administrative step, it’s a positive contribution.

Once you confirm, a short animation appears celebrating the tree you’ve helped plant. It makes the platform come alive in the best possible way, adding a bit of warmth to what used to be a purely functional action.

A toast then appears to guide you:

“X campaigns have been archived. You can find them under My Campaigns → Status: Archived.”

It’s clear, reassuring, and helps you keep your workspace organised without breaking your flow.

A few moments later, you’ll receive an email directly from Tree-Nation inviting you to claim your tree and follow the impact of your contribution. It’s a small touch that strengthens the link between your day-to-day work and a much bigger mission.

And if you happen to archive once the monthly tree-planting goal has already been met, you won’t be met with a blocker. Instead, you’ll see an encouraging message that your action still helps reduce CO₂, with more trees coming soon.

The whole flow is designed to feel intuitive, responsible, and quietly joyful. Archiving becomes not just a clean-up task, but a moment of impact.

FAQ

What steps can brands take to reduce the carbon footprint of their influencer marketing campaigns?

Brands can implement several strategies to minimize the environmental impact of their influencer marketing efforts:

  • Optimise Content Formats: Use compressed images and short, engaging videos to reduce data usage.
  • Choose Local Collaborations: Partner with local influencers to minimise transportation emissions.
  • Batch Content Production: Plan multiple campaigns during a single shoot to reduce travel and resource use.
  • Leverage Existing Content: Repurpose user-generated content to minimize the need for new productions.
  • Reduce Mass Gifting: Limit unsolicited product shipments to decrease transportation emissions and waste.

Implementing these practices can lead to more sustainable influencer marketing campaigns.

How does measuring the carbon footprint of influencer campaigns align with the Paris Agreement?

The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, aims to limit global warming to well below 2°C, with efforts to stay within 1.5°C. By measuring and reducing the carbon footprint of influencer marketing campaigns, organisations contribute to this global goal by decreasing their greenhouse gas emissions. This alignment demonstrates a commitment to international climate objectives and aligns with CSR principles and goals.

How does influencer marketing contribute to the digital carbon footprint?

Influencer marketing contributes to the digital carbon footprint through several activities:

  • Content Creation and distribution: Producing high-quality photos, videos, and other media, and sharing content across platforms requires data transmission and storage, which consume energy.
  • Product Shipments: Sending products to influencers for reviews or promotions involves transportation emissions.
  • Event Hosting: Organising events for influencers can lead to significant energy use and associated emissions.

What are the growth projections for the carbon footprint of the digital sector?

It is difficult to find global data to answer this question. However, French research from 2022 shows that if current trends were to continue without intervention, the carbon footprint of digital technologies could increase by 60% by 2040, potentially accounting for up to 6.7% of the nation's carbon footprint.

To align with global climate objectives, emissions from the broader digital sector must be slashed by nearly half by 2030, according to the World Bank, which says the sector is headed in the right direction as a leader in renewable energy adoption, accounting for 60 percent of renewable power purchases in 2021.

How does the digital ecosystem contribute to global carbon emissions?

The digital ecosystem is estimated to contribute between 2% and 4% of global carbon emissions through various channels:

  • Data Centers store and manage vast amounts of data, consuming substantial energy and often relying on non-renewable sources.
  • Content Delivery Networks (CDNs): CDNs facilitate the rapid delivery of digital content but require considerable energy to operate.
  • User Devices: The production, usage, and disposal of smartphones, tablets, and computers.
  • Networking Infrastructure: The global network of servers, cables and satellites that enable internet connectivity.

How does it work?

Kolsquare has partnered with carbon impact business solution Sami to develop a calculator capable of aggregating the emissions produced by various elements of the creation and diffusion of an influencer marketing campaign. To function correctly, it requires input of data such as number of KOLs in a campaign, gifted products, travel and accommodation, electronic equipment, type of content produced, and so on.

Why is it important to measure the carbon footprint of influencer marketing campaigns?

The planet is heating up fast—global temperatures have already risen by 1.1°C, and if we don’t act now, we’re on track to exceed 1.5°C within the next two decades (IPCC, 2023). The digital industry, including social media and influencer marketing, is a growing contributor to global carbon emissions. While we often think of sustainability in terms of manufacturing or transport, the reality is that every like, share, and video view comes with an environmental cost.

Measuring the carbon footprint of influencer marketing campaigns is the first step to understanding the environmental impact of digital activities. By quantifying emissions from content creation, data storage, distribution, and related processes, organisations can identify areas to implement more sustainable practices, thereby reducing their overall carbon footprint. By tracking emissions, brands and agencies can pinpoint areas for improvement, adopt more responsible practices, and make their campaigns both impactful and sustainable.

Influence has power—let’s use it responsibly. Start measuring the carbon footprint of your campaigns today and let’s drive change together.
